I am going to stop complaining about what our media consumption has become. Reading habits are very personal and it is great that there are media for all likings. I embrace the variety.
To serve all my five readers I have decided to make different versions of today’s post for different attention spans.
Here is the short version:
Row houses :(
And this is the Twitter version:
Reading Company by @MaxBarry. Satirically funny. Companies are like buildings. Wondering what suits me best. Don’t seem to like #rowhouses.
This is the official excerpt as seen in Facebook:
Companies are like buildings. Different types and sizes all have their own characteristics. I work in a detached house now and don’t miss my row house years much, but in real life I want to live in an apartment building and have a strange longing for work in a big company.
For those who can manage a little more, here is a medium-long version:
Companies are like buildings. Different types and sizes all have their own characteristics.
I work in a detached house now. I can have a say on everything and change whatever I want, but I also need to shovel all the snow.
I am reading the book Company by Max Barry. It is a story about a large company where all customers are internal. It is funny in quite satirical a way.
Large enterprises are big apartment buildings. You can’t really change much, but a service company is taking care of the infrastructure.
The middle option can be a place where support functions work but you can still make a difference, or a bureaucratic system without the resources of a big company.
I don’t miss my row house years much, but every now and then I long for work in a big company. The nostalgia will probably be over by the time I finnish the book.
In real life, I want to live in an apartment building. For my analogy to work, I should like a job in a large company. I guess I would just need the right job, with some qualities of a detached house.
